United's New Status Match Is a Not-So-Subtle Dig at Delta and American

United named its offer for rival elites "Switch to Better Wi-Fi." Who qualifies, what it takes to keep the status and why the October 15 deadline matters.

United's status match for Delta and American flyers is open, but only until October 15. The airline announced on October 1 that frequent flyers with elite status at either rival can get matching status in MileagePlus, United's loyalty program, and test it for 90 days before deciding whether to stay.

United is calling the offer "Switch to Better Wi-Fi," and that's the pitch. The airline has been racing to install Starlink, SpaceX's fast satellite internet. It had the system on more than 600 planes by October 1, with 1,000 planned by the end of the year. Starlink Wi-Fi is free for MileagePlus members. On planes without it, Wi-Fi still costs extra.

Who Qualifies

The match is open to MileagePlus members based in the US who hold earned or lifetime elite status with Delta or American. Status you got through another trial or promotion doesn't count.

You apply on United's offer page by uploading proof of your Delta SkyMiles or American AAdvantage level, and United says it will tell you within three business days whether you're approved. Joining MileagePlus itself is free if you aren't a member yet.

How You Keep It

The matched status starts as a 90-day challenge. To keep it, you need to fly and spend a set amount on United or United Express during that window. Hit the target and the status lasts through January 31, 2028. The spending required reportedly runs from about $1,500 to $7,000, depending on how high a tier you're matching.

Is It Worth Switching?

For travelers who live near a United hub such as Newark, Chicago or Denver, a free test of United status is low risk. You'll find out quickly whether United's network and onboard Wi-Fi suit you better than what you have now.

The catch is the spending requirement. Flying enough on United in 90 days to keep the status can mean taking trips away from the airline you already have status with, so you could end up building two programs halfway instead of one fully. If most of your travel is locked into Delta or American by where you live or work, the match may cost you more than it gives you.

The deadline is the part not to miss. Applications close on October 15.
