Going to the Amalfi Coast in November? Naples’ Airport Won’t Be Open

Naples’ main airport closes from Nov. 1 to 30 for runway work. Some flights are moving to Salerno, about an hour away, and others are being canceled. Which airlines are going where and how to get there.

Naples airport is closed for all of November. Capodichino, the city's main airport, shuts on Sunday, Nov. 1, for a month of runway work, and it isn't expected to reopen until December. Some airlines are moving their flights to Salerno's small airport, about an hour down the coast, while others are canceling or sending passengers to Rome instead. If you're flying to Naples, the Amalfi Coast or Capri in November, here's what to check.

Latest Updates

Wednesday, 8 a.m. ET: The shuttle bus between Naples and Salerno airport is confirmed at €12 a trip, with eight departures each way a day. Capodichino stays open as normal through Saturday, Oct. 31.

Why Naples Is Closing

The airport's operator, GESAC, is rebuilding the runway and taxiways to keep up with safety rules. With only one runway, there's no way to keep flying while it's torn up, so the whole airport closes. The work was originally planned for early 2026 and was pushed back to November, one of the quietest months for travel to the region. The job is expected to take about 24 days, with a few extra days built in for bad weather, so an earlier reopening is possible but hasn't been confirmed.

Which Airlines Are Going Where

About a third of Naples' traffic is moving to Salerno Costa d'Amalfi e del Cilento airport. According to the airport's plans, these airlines are shifting at least some flights there in November:

  • easyJet from Milan Malpensa
  • Eurowings from Düsseldorf and Stuttgart
  • flydubai from Dubai, daily
  • Iberia from Madrid
  • ITA Airways from Milan Linate
  • Luxair from Luxembourg
  • Neos from Sharm el-Sheikh
  • Transavia from Amsterdam and Paris Orly
  • Vueling from Barcelona

Other airlines are handling it differently. Air France and KLM are reportedly suspending their Naples flights for the month, and ITA is reportedly connecting Rome and Naples by bus for some passengers. Some travelers are being rebooked into Rome or Bari instead. If your airline isn't on the list above, don't assume your flight is moving to Salerno. Check your booking, because it may have been canceled or rerouted somewhere else.

Getting To and From Salerno

Salerno's airport is much smaller than Naples, and it's farther from the city. A shuttle bus run by Busitalia Campania with the airport operator links Naples' Piazza Garibaldi, outside the central train station, with Salerno airport. It costs €12 a trip, you pay by card on board and there are eight departures each way a day, timed around the flights. Plan on about an hour on the road, more in traffic. If you're heading to the Amalfi Coast or Paestum, Salerno is actually closer than Naples, so the switch could work in your favor.

If You're Booked

Check your flight now, not the day before, and make sure you know which airport you're actually flying from. If your airline moved your flight to Salerno and that doesn't work for you, ask about changing or canceling, since a new airport is a big enough change that many airlines will offer a free rebooking or refund. If you're flying around the start of the closure, keep an eye on Friday's strike in Italy too, which could add to the disruption on Oct. 30.
