# Virgin Atlantic Gets Economy Catering Right. The Seat, Less So.

- Description: Genuinely good food and a warm crew on the A330neo, let down by a narrow seat and a call bell nobody answered.

Virgin Atlantic is one of the more distinctive airlines crossing the Atlantic, and the A330-900neo is their newest aircraft. I flew their economy cabin from London Heathrow to Boston, a shade over seven hours.

The transatlantic market is about as competitive as flying gets. London to the US East Coast is fought over by British Airways, Virgin, Delta, United, American and JetBlue, and most of them are selling the same journey at a similar price. That leaves very little room to compete on anything except the experience itself, which is why the food, the crew and the seat matter more here than they would almost anywhere else.

The Contrail

****Transparency note:** I hold Flying Club Gold, and this was one of my first Virgin Atlantic flights. The crew gave me a champagne welcome and, after takeoff, invited me to move to an empty row so I could stretch out. I've set all of that aside for the purposes of this review. The seat I moved to was identical to the one I booked, so nothing about the product I'm describing was different because of my status.

## Ground Experience

Heathrow Terminal 3 departures always impresses me. The drop-off area and the check-in hall are large and calm, which is not something you can take for granted at an airport this busy.

Economy check-in was pretty chill, honestly. I got there around 10:30 to find mostly kiosks for checking in and tagging bags, then a small line for bag drop after that. The Virgin staff buzzing around the check-in area have a fun energy about them and were clearly happy to help, which set a good tone for the day.

The terminal itself is nice, with slightly crazy mall vibes. The duty free section right after security is a bit of a bottleneck, though. I'll say that Heathrow's layout and design have never really wowed me, but it isn't bad either.

Where it falls down is the gates. Mine was gate 24, which is a bus gate, and the services and facilities get thin once you leave the shopping area and head down there. There were no bathrooms in the gate area at all. A lot of the gates here are also the board-then-sit type, which I don't think is up to the standard you'd expect from a major international airport.

To be fair to them, the lower bus gate area is well lit with high ceilings, and the plane views from down there are great.

Virgin makes bus boarding about as painless as it can be. They announced everything clearly and communicated well the whole way through. They did call for priority boarding, though nobody was actually checking anything, so the order dissolved pretty quickly.

## Boarding and First Impressions

The crew were nice at the door, and boarding came with upbeat pop music and pink mood lighting, which suits Virgin's whole personality.

They also made an announcement I've never heard on any other airline. Photos and video are welcome onboard, as long as you get permission from any crew or passengers in the frame. That's a stark change from a recent KLM flight where filming got banned outright because of me.

The aircraft also smelled faintly of dog, which I'll leave there without further comment.

Check-in had told me the forward economy section was almost entirely blocked off for weight and balance reasons, and I could confirm that with my own eyes once I was onboard. The flight was remarkably empty. The crew announced a passenger count, and while I can't be certain I heard it right, I believe they said 114.

## Seat

Virgin's A330neo economy is laid out 2-4-2 across rows 45 to 68, with 184 seats back there. I was in 57G, an aisle in the center block, before moving to 51G after takeoff.

The Contrail

The seats are new but nothing incredible. The space seems about right to me, neither generous nor cramped. What I did notice is the width. Economy seats are always hard to judge on space, but this one felt especially narrow, and the armrests feel very thin.

The cabin is in good condition overall, though my tray table and the area around it were a bit dirty, and the seat next to mine had some fraying down the side.

The headrest, on the other hand, is excellent. It's soft, and the wings are sturdy without being rigid. It's one of the better ones I've come across.

There's one power outlet for every two seats, which is reasonable enough, and you get individual air vents. Air vents are impressive on a new aircraft from a non-US carrier, and I will always appreciate them.

The lavatories are tiny, but they're really nice for economy. The dark color scheme and the bright vanity mirror make them feel more thought through than they needed to be.

## Amenities

Waiting at my seat were headphones, a pillow and a blanket. There were somehow two sets of headphones, which I still can't explain. No amenity kit, which is normal for economy on this route. The blanket was fine but the pillow was subpar.

![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/ac/ed/acedfbb2-ff9c-499b-b431-eb36d7539be1/content/images/2026/09/IMG_8360.JPG)

The screens are the first thing that grabs you. They're big, bright and responsive, and the selection is more than large enough. Apple TV onboard is a nice touch, and I'm a map guy, so I was well served either way. There's no remote, which didn't bother me at all.

Wi-Fi costs £18.99 for the full flight, which works out at around 26 US dollars. That feels on the higher side for a flight under seven hours. It performed well for most of the way, and I was even able to stream video at points, but it dropped out for stretches of the last quarter. Spotty at the end, solid otherwise.

## Catering

This is where the flight earns its score.

Drinks came round quickly after takeoff, and the crew then came back to collect cups and trash from that service before the meal arrived. It's a small thing, but it makes the cabin feel looked after.

![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/ac/ed/acedfbb2-ff9c-499b-b431-eb36d7539be1/content/images/2026/09/IMG_8381.JPG)

The meal service itself was slow to get going, arriving about an hour and a half after takeoff. I wasn't impressed with the flow of it.

The food, though, was very good. The menu was chicken tikka masala or cherry tomato and feta pasta, and the crew generously let me sample both.

The masala has a real kick to it and is super flavorful for an economy meal. It's not world class, but it's well above average, and it was genuinely impressive next to the Delta flight I'd taken the night before. The pasta was good too, just not as good, and I'd call it average with plenty of flavor (I forgot to take a photo before eating it). The bread was bad. The dessert was insanely good.

You know it's a good tray when there isn't even room on it for the main courses, which is a Contrail first.

Before landing they served a cold cheese and onion sandwich, but they did it as a tea service with a warm scone, which I thought was a fun way to handle it.

## Service

The crew are sweet and genuinely nice, and they always seem happy on Virgin. There were frequent drink services throughout the flight, including a full one at the midpoint.

They were personable too. At one point I left some plastic on a seat across the aisle and a crew member picked it up without being asked. The humor was on point as well. When one of them handed me the pasta, she announced "and here is your dessert," which tells you exactly how high the spirits were.

![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/ac/ed/acedfbb2-ff9c-499b-b431-eb36d7539be1/content/images/2026/09/IMG_8409.JPG)

Then the call bell.

I pressed it and nothing happened. Crew walked straight past without acknowledging it. With two hours left in the flight I went to the back myself to find someone, and there was nobody there at all. As luck would have it, a beverage service started five minutes later. I asked for hot tea, and even though they had no hot water, they offered to make it and bring it to me anyway. And they did.

They noticed the call bell about an hour later and apologised profusely.

If The Contrail had a call button test, Virgin would fail it with flying colors. Given how responsive they were the rest of the time, though, I'm inclined to believe they just missed it.

---

## The Verdict

Virgin Atlantic's A330neo economy is a solid hard product carried by two things they do genuinely well, which are the food and the crew.

The seat is new but narrow, the pillow is poor, and the Wi-Fi is expensive for a sector this length. Against all that, the screens are excellent, the headrest is one of the better ones out there, and the catering is well above what transatlantic economy usually gives you.

The call bell going unanswered is the one thing I'd flag, though I don't think it says much about the airline. The same crew that missed it made me tea they didn't have the hot water for, so I'm putting it down to a genuine miss.

Would I fly it again? Yes, easily. Airlines and individual flights vary so much that I'm not convinced any one carrier owns this route, but Virgin makes the crossing more fun than most.
