- Description: British Airways flies the route more than anyone, but it didn't top our tracking. We followed 575 flights between Heathrow and New York for 10 days to see who actually lands on schedule, and the answer depends on which way you're flying.

London to New York is one of the busiest long-haul routes in the world, and the airlines on it compete hard on seats, lounges and Wi-Fi. But which of them actually gets you there on time? To find out, we tracked every nonstop flight between London Heathrow and New York's JFK and Newark airports for 10 days, 575 flights in all, from Oct. 18 to 27\. The answer depends a lot on which direction you're flying.

## The Two Directions Look Nothing Alike

Heading to London, almost everyone arrived on time. Of flights from JFK to Heathrow, 93% reached the gate within 15 minutes of schedule, the standard the US government uses, and most landed early. From Newark, 82% did.

Coming home was another story. Only 71% of flights from Heathrow to JFK arrived on time, and 70% of those to Newark. That's nearly three in every 10 flights to New York running late, on a route where travelers often have connections or a long commute waiting on the other end. Anyone who has stood in the customs hall at JFK at 9 p.m. knows a late landing rarely stays a small delay.

## Who Got You There on Time

On the busier route into JFK, the gap between airlines was wide.

- **Delta** had the best record, with 89% of its Heathrow to JFK flights on time, though it only flew 18 of them in our window.
- **American** was at 82%.
- **British Airways**, which flies the route more than anyone, was at 75%.
- **JetBlue** was at 65%, on a small sample of 20 flights.
- **Virgin Atlantic** was at 54%, meaning nearly half of its flights from Heathrow to JFK arrived more than 15 minutes late.

Into Newark, United, which runs most flights there, hit 77%, while British Airways' smaller Newark schedule managed only 50%.

Going the other way, the order shuffled. Delta, JetBlue, Virgin Atlantic and British Airways all landed on time more than 92% of the time from JFK. American was at 85%. From Newark, British Airways landed every one of its flights on time, while United was at 76%, with about one in eight of its flights more than an hour late.

Combining both directions, Delta came out on top at 94%, followed by American at 84%, British Airways at 82%, JetBlue at 80%, United at 77% and Virgin Atlantic at 74%. Cancellations were rare, just four out of 575 flights. Delta and JetBlue fly far fewer flights on this route than the others, so their numbers can swing more on a few good or bad days.

## Why the Trip to New York Runs Late

Two things are working against flights heading west. The first is the wind. The jet stream, a fast river of air high over the Atlantic, blows from west to east, so planes heading to London ride a tailwind and planes heading to New York fight a headwind. On the days we tracked, the typical flight from JFK to Heathrow was scheduled for 7 hours and 10 minutes but took about 6 hours and 45, so most landed early. Flights from Heathrow to JFK were scheduled for 8 hours and actually took slightly longer, leaving no cushion if anything went wrong. Same ocean, same airlines, and somehow the trip home always feels longer. It is.

The second is Heathrow itself. It's one of the busiest airports in the world with only two runways, so planes often wait in line to take off. The typical flight to JFK spent about 27 minutes between leaving the gate and getting airborne, and flights to Newark about 32\. Later departures from Heathrow can also inherit delays that build up across the day.

Heathrow is also in the middle of a shake-up that's [splitting up Delta and Virgin Atlantic](https://www.thecontrail.org/delta-heathrow-terminal-4/) into different terminals, and [American's](https://www.thecontrail.org/american-airlines-heathrow-catering/) London flights have only just gone back to fully London-cooked meals. We can't tie any of these delays to those changes, but they're a reminder that a lot more goes into a smooth flight than the seat.

## How to Pick Your Flight

If you're flying to London, you can book on price, schedule or seat. On-time performance barely separates the airlines. Coming home is where it pays to be choosy. On this snapshot, Delta and American got passengers into JFK on time most reliably. If you have a tight connection or an evening plan in New York, leave more of a buffer than the schedule suggests. And if you can, choose an earlier flight out of Heathrow, before the day's delays have had a chance to pile up. Your dinner reservation in Manhattan will thank you.
