If you've tried to text Delta for help this week, you've probably noticed it doesn't work anymore. Delta has quietly ended its text message customer service, and anyone who texts the airline now gets an automatic reply saying "support through this messaging channel is no longer available," along with a link to its help center. Getting a real person at Delta is still possible, but it now means going through the airline's AI assistant first or picking up the phone.

Delta hasn't announced the change. Travelers started getting the auto-reply on Monday, according to Thrifty Traveler, and the "Message us" button in the Fly Delta app now opens Delta Concierge, the airline's AI chatbot, instead of a text conversation with an agent.

## What Changed

Until now, one of the easiest ways to reach Delta was to send it a text from your phone's regular messaging app and wait for an agent to write back. You could fire off a question, put your phone away and pick up the conversation whenever a reply arrived. For a lot of frequent flyers, it was the best way to get help without sitting on hold.

That channel is gone. Delta Concierge, which Delta first announced in early 2025 and opened to every SkyMiles member in August, is now the front door. It can check flight status, rebook you during a delay or cancellation, track your bags, look up your miles and eCredits, and cancel a whole trip. When it launched for everyone, Delta's chief digital officer, Eric Phillips, called it "a big step forward in our goal to put more control in customers' hands." The airline still labels it a beta.

How to reach a real person now

✕Texting Delta no longer works. Texts get an automatic reply.

1

Ask the bot for an agent

Fly Delta app → **Concierge** → ask to speak to an agent. Be direct; it tries to solve things itself first.

2

Call

Main line **1-800-221-1212**. Medallion members: use the number on your card or in the app.

3

At the airport, find a person

Gate agents and the ticket counter can rebook you on the spot. Sky Club agents can help too.

4

Know what the bot can't do

Some changes, like adding a lap infant after check-in, still need a phone call. Skip the bot for those.

As of Oct. 28, 2026CONTRAIL

The timing isn't great for Delta. The same week, a reply from Delta's customer care team to one of its top-tier Diamond Medallion members went out with the AI instructions still pasted at the top: "here's a more polished and professional version with a warm, empathetic tone." The member had complained about inconsistent answers and a chat that cut out halfway through. The email was shared on Reddit and flagged on X, and Delta hasn't publicly commented on it.

## How to Reach a Real Person at Delta Now

The easiest route is through the app. Open the Fly Delta app, tap Concierge and ask to speak to an agent. Be direct about it, since the bot will try to solve the problem itself first. Travelers who've tried it say you do get handed to a person, but it can take longer than texting used to.

Your other option is the phone. Delta's main reservations line is 1-800-221-1212\. If you have Medallion status, use the dedicated number on the back of your card or in the app instead. Some changes, like adding a lap infant after you've checked in, still can't be done online at all, so for those it's worth calling right away and not wasting time with the bot.

If you're already at the airport, skip both and go to a person. A gate agent or the ticket counter can rebook you on the spot, and if you have Sky Club access, the agents in the club can help with changes too.

## Where This Is Heading

Delta isn't the only airline pushing customers toward AI. Plenty of airlines are putting more of their customer service into chatbots, which can handle simple jobs like rebooking a canceled flight in seconds, at any hour. For straightforward problems, that's genuinely useful.

The trouble starts when the problem isn't simple. A missed connection with a partner airline, a refund dispute or a booking with an infant are exactly the kinds of situations where you want someone who can bend the rules a little, and those are the cases where a bot that won't let go is most frustrating. Delta's been making a lot of changes this fall, from [Heathrow splitting it up from partner Virgin Atlantic](https://www.thecontrail.org/delta-heathrow-terminal-4/) to this one, and for its most loyal flyers, how easy it is to reach a person when things go wrong may matter more than any of them.
