Etihad's Lagos flights return in March 2027, and the Abu Dhabi airline is already lining up partners to carry passengers beyond Nigeria's biggest city. On October 5, it signed a deal with Ibom Air, a smaller Nigerian airline. From March 2027, travelers will be able to connect through Lagos or Accra on one ticket to five Nigerian cities including Abuja, Port Harcourt and Uyo.

It's the second deal of its kind in three months. In July, Etihad signed a similar agreement with Air Peace, Nigeria's largest airline. That deal opens up 20 destinations across Nigeria and West and Central Africa.

## The New Routes

Etihad plans daily flights between Abu Dhabi and Lagos starting March 23, 2027, bringing back a route it dropped years ago. It's also adding Accra, Ghana's capital, with four flights a week from March.

Right now, Emirates is the only airline flying nonstop between the UAE and Nigeria, with a daily flight between Dubai and Lagos. Etihad's return means travelers heading between Nigeria and the Gulf, Asia or beyond will have a second Gulf airline to choose from.

## Who Ibom Air Is

Ibom Air is owned by the government of Akwa Ibom State in southeastern Nigeria and has been flying since 2019\. It's based in Uyo, the state capital, and serves a small network of Nigerian cities plus Accra. For Etihad, it fills in cities a long way from Lagos, especially in the country's south and east.

## What a Single Ticket Gets You

The deals are what airlines call interline agreements, which let two airlines sell one ticket covering both of their flights. That's more useful than it sounds. Your bags are usually checked all the way to your final city, so you don't have to collect them in Lagos and check in again. If a late first flight makes you miss your connection, the airlines are generally responsible for getting you on the next one.

Book the same trip as two separate tickets and you're on your own. A delay into Lagos could mean buying a brand-new ticket for the second flight, which is why a single ticket matters most on trips with tight connections.

## Why Nigeria

Nigeria is Africa's most populous country and one of its largest economies, and a large Nigerian community lives in the UAE. The two countries also signed a trade agreement in January 2026, which gives airlines another reason to expect more travel between them.

Nothing changes for travelers until March 2027\. When it does, anyone flying between Nigeria and the Middle East or Asia will have a real alternative to Emirates, with easier connections to cities well beyond Lagos.
