Do Americans need ETIAS to visit Europe? Not yet. The EU's new online travel authorization, known as ETIAS, still isn't running, and as of mid-October there was no start date. That surprises a lot of travelers, because for years the EU said it would launch in late 2026\. In July, that target quietly disappeared from the EU's official ETIAS website, and the launch is now widely expected in 2027\. If you're flying to Paris, Rome or Barcelona this winter, you can book the trip without it.

Something else did change this year, though, and it's the one you'll actually notice at the airport.

## What ETIAS Is and Why It Keeps Slipping

ETIAS, short for European Travel Information and Authorisation System, is a quick online pre-approval for travelers who don't need a visa to visit Europe, including Americans. Think of it like the ESTA that visitors fill out before flying to the US. Once it launches, you'll apply online before your trip, pay a fee and get an approval linked to your passport. It will cover about 30 European countries, including the ones in Europe's passport-free Schengen area.

The system has been delayed several times over the years. The EU has said it will announce the start date several months before ETIAS goes live, and its plans include a transition period at the beginning, so travelers won't be turned away on day one for not knowing about it. The next public board meeting of eu-LISA, the EU agency building the system, is set for Nov. 17 to 19 in Dublin, which is worth watching for news on a new date.

When it does arrive, here's what to expect:

- **Cost:** €20, or about $23\. Travelers under 18 and over 70 won't pay, though they'll still need to apply.
- **How long it lasts:** up to three years, or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. A new passport means a new application.
- **Your 90 days don't change.** ETIAS lets you travel to Europe. It doesn't extend the usual limit of 90 days in any 180-day period.

One warning matters right now: there's nothing to apply for yet, so any website taking an ETIAS payment today isn't official. Plenty of lookalike sites already exist. When the real system launches, the application will come through the EU's own website and app.

## The Change You'll Notice at the Airport

While ETIAS waited, the EU switched on its Entry/Exit System, or EES. It replaces the old passport stamp with a digital record. The first time you enter Europe under the new system, border officers take your fingerprints and a photo, and they record every entry and exit after that.

EES became fully mandatory on April 10, 2026\. Until early September, countries were allowed to scale back the fingerprint step when lines got too long, but that flexibility expired on Sept. 6\. That means your first trip into Europe under EES can mean a slower passport line than you're used to, especially at busy airports at peak times.

In practice, leave extra time for your first entry. If you're connecting inside Europe, say landing in Frankfurt and continuing to Rome, the border check usually happens at your first stop, so a tight connection is riskier than it used to be. Give yourself a longer layover where you can.

Americans · Europe this winter

What you need to visit Europe right now

✓**A valid US passport.** Issued in the last 10 years and valid 3+ months after you leave Europe

✕**No ETIAS yet.** It isn't running. Don't pay any site that says otherwise

✓**Extra time at the border.** First entry now means fingerprints and a photo

✓**Going to the UK?** That's separate. You need the UK's own ETA

## What You Need for Europe Right Now

For a trip this winter, Americans need a valid US passport and nothing else from the EU. Check that your passport was issued within the last 10 years and is valid for at least three months after the day you plan to leave Europe, because those Schengen rules trip people up more often than any new system.

The UK is a separate story. It isn't part of the EU or ETIAS, and Americans have needed the UK's own Electronic Travel Authorisation, or ETA, since January 2025\. If your trip includes London, apply for that before you go.

If you're also traveling around Europe this month, check strike dates before you book trains or tight connections. France has a national strike on [Thursday, Nov. 5](https://www.thecontrail.org/france-strike-november-5-flights/), Spain on [Wednesday, Nov. 11](https://www.thecontrail.org/spain-strike-november-11-flights/), and Italy has [several strike days](https://www.thecontrail.org/italy-strike-november-2026-flights/) through late November.
