- Description: Northern Cyprus's prime minister wants to relaunch Cyprus Turkish Airlines in 2028, but only if his party wins December's election. Even then, every route out would still run through Turkey.

On Monday, the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) Prime Minister Ünal Üstel announced plans to relaunch Cyprus Turkish Airlines in 2028, alongside a wider set of projects aimed at 2033, the TRNC's 50th anniversary. The program aims to improve the economy and welfare of the de facto state, recognized only by Turkey, on the island of Cyprus. The proposed airline's future is contingent on Üstel's party winning the legislative election expected in December and him remaining in office to implement the plan. The proposal could strengthen tourism and increase competition on routes to northern Cyprus, but it also carries political significance in a territory whose international isolation continues to shape its aviation industry.

## What Happened to the Original Airline

The original Cyprus Turkish Airlines ceased operations in June of 2010 after experiencing underfunding and other financial difficulties. Before its collapse, it connected northern Cyprus with destinations including Turkey and the United Kingdom, although European services generally required a stop in mainland Turkey. Its proposed revival comes as Turkish Cypriot authorities seek to expand tourism and improve transport links through Ercan International Airport.

## Why Flights Still Go Through Turkey

Ercan Airport, which serves the TRNC or northern Cyprus, is not treated internationally as an ordinary independent international airport. Flights widely operate through Turkey, meaning that passengers traveling from northern Cyprus to destinations such as the UK typically connect through Turkish airports. Currently, Ercan is served by Turkish carriers including Turkish Airlines, Pegasus, AJet and SunExpress. Re-establishing Cyprus Turkish Airlines as a locally branded airline would not, by itself, change any restrictions or secure direct international routes. The proposed carrier would have to navigate the existing regulatory environment, airport arrangements and the limited international recognition of the TRNC.

## The Politics Behind It

Nevertheless, the initiative could carry symbolic value for Turkish Cypriot authorities. A national carrier could possibly provide a visible expression of economic autonomy and strengthen the administration's efforts to present northern Cyprus as an internationally connected destination. International actors and critics may instead view the proposal as reinforcing the separate institutions of TRNC and the internationally recognized Republic of Cyprus. Additionally, the original airline's financial collapse illustrates the difficulties of sustaining operations in a restricted market.

## What Comes Next

The proposed 2028 launch therefore represents both an aviation opportunity and a political statement. If Üstel's party wins the election and the project is successfully implemented, Cyprus Turkish Airlines could strengthen northern Cyprus's tourism sector. However, its ability to offer new international connections will remain constrained by the island's unresolved division.
