# Condor's Striped Planes Look Ridiculous. That Might Be the Point

Condor's striped livery is, to me, one of the strangest paint jobs flying today. The German vacation airline paints each of its planes in bold vertical stripes of one bright color. Every time I see one at an airport, it looks less like an airplane and more like a beach towel that learned to fly.

Still, I almost never see one without hearing someone nearby talk about it.

Most recently, it happened in Cape Town. As our bus crossed the tarmac to my far more boring FlySafair plane, a kid near me pointed out the window and asked, "What plane is that? It looks cool." It was a Condor jet, stripes and all.

## Where the Stripes Came From

Condor unveiled the design in April 2022\. Its first striped plane, a yellow Airbus A321, flew from Frankfurt to the Canary Islands. The airline says the stripes are inspired by beach umbrellas, beach towels and deck chairs. Each color has a vacation name: Sunshine yellow, Passion red, Sea blue, Island green and Beach beige.

The timing explains a lot. Condor had been owned by Thomas Cook, the British travel company that collapsed in 2019\. The new look was a way for Condor to announce itself as an independent airline, and its CEO summed up the idea in three words: "Condor is vacation."

Not everyone was sold. When the livery launched, one aviation outlet openly asked whether it was the worst airline color scheme ever.

## Why I Think It Works

Most airline liveries look roughly the same: a white plane, a logo and maybe a stripe of color on the tail. You could swap a lot of them around and most travelers wouldn't notice.

Nobody mixes up a Condor plane. You can spot one across the airport and remember it afterward, and apparently you talk about it too. For an airline that sells beach vacations, getting people to associate its planes with summer vacations is the whole job, and the stripes do that instantly.

There's also something smart about having five colors. A striped plane parked next to another striped plane in a different color looks deliberate, like a set, which makes the whole fleet feel like a brand rather than a collection of planes.

## Ridiculous or Genius?

I think it's both. I still find the stripes a little ridiculous, and I'm not sure they'll age well. But an airline livery has two jobs: to be recognized and to make you feel something about the airline. Condor's does both better than almost anyone's.

If the goal was to get people pointing at the window and talking about Condor, it's working. I'm proof, since I'm writing a whole article about it.
