- Description: I got a full long-haul business class seat, free Wi-Fi and the best noodles I've had on a plane on a three-and-a-half-hour flight from Taipei to Ho Chi Minh City. The lounge was the only real letdown.

Most airlines save their best seats for their longest flights, so I didn't expect much from a short hop from Taipei to Ho Chi Minh City. China Airlines, Taiwan's largest airline, had other ideas. My flight was on its Boeing 777-300ER, the same plane it flies to New York and Amsterdam, which meant China Airlines 777-300ER business class with a full lie-flat seat for a flight of just three and a half hours.

## Check-In and the Lounge

Taoyuan's Terminal 1 was already packed and loud at 5:27 a.m. The signs told me to head to row 11 for my flight, but the business class counter there looked closed. It took a line in tiny print on a screen to send me to row 9 instead. Once I found it, though, the business counter was nearly empty and check-in took just a few minutes.

China Airlines has two lounges in Terminal 1, almost next to each other, and I went to the larger, flagship one. It's beautiful and moody, with dark finishes that match the airline's style onboard, and I liked the mix of dining tables and comfortable lounge seating. Power outlets were easy to find, and there were showers too.

The food was fine without being memorable. There was congee and dumplings on one side and sausage, bacon and pasta on the other, plus smoked pig's ear I happily skipped. Oddly, the Western dishes were the stronger ones.

The bigger problem was space. As the morning rush built, the low ceilings made the room louder, and before long every seat was taken. For a flagship lounge, running out of places to sit is a real miss. It looks the part, but on a busy morning it doesn't quite work.

## Boarding

Boarding started about 10 minutes late, with business class using a priority lane and clear announcements. From there, China Airlines made a strong first impression. The crew welcomed me at the door, and the cabin manager walked through the cabin greeting each passenger, thanking us for flying China Airlines and telling us how long the flight would be. A second flight attendant then welcomed me by name, handed me a menu and explained the meal service.

The pre-departure drink was a lemon and guava blend, which was a refreshing change from the usual orange juice or Champagne. Hot towels followed, and meal orders were taken before we pushed back.

## The Seat

This plane has China Airlines' full international business class, with 40 seats in a 1-2-1 layout. The seats are arranged in a reverse herringbone, angled toward the window or the center so every passenger gets direct access to the aisle. Privacy is fine, though without a door it isn't anything special.

What sets it apart is the design. China Airlines has turned a common seat into something genuinely beautiful, with wood finishes, warm lighting and a table lamp that might be the best I've seen at any seat. The cushions are well padded and really comfortable, and the footwell felt unusually roomy for this style of seat. Storage was solid, and I had two USB-A ports and a power outlet.

The seat was in good shape overall, with some wear on the wood and metal trim. My one annoyance was the tray table, which kept sliding forward even when half folded.

## Screens, Wi-Fi and Amenities

China Airlines made Wi-Fi free on its Boeing 777s, Airbus A350s and A321neos in 2025, and business class gets unlimited browsing. I logged in with my seat number and birthday, it connected right after takeoff and it stayed fast all flight. My receipt said I'd saved $21.95, which is a lot of value on a flight this short.

The entertainment screen was big but not especially sharp or responsive. It did the job. Headphones weren't at the seat, and I only found them after asking the crew, who pointed me to a compartment between the seat and the aisle.

There was no amenity kit, which is normal on a flight this short, but the bedding was the real long-haul version, a proper pillow and comforter rather than the thin blanket some airlines hand out on shorter routes. The lavatories were clean and the front one was spacious, with a patterned wall and the best smelling soap I've come across. The other lavatory even had a window.

## The Food

Meal service started almost as soon as we took off. The crew laid tablecloths so smoothly I barely noticed, and less than 20 minutes after takeoff my meal and drink were in front of me, even though I wasn't near the front of the cabin. Everything came on a single tray, which made it fast, if a little less special than separate courses.

My tray had noodles, a soup and a bun, and the noodles were probably the best I've ever had on a plane. The meat in the soup was tender, the vegetables were great and the bun was excellent. To drink, I tried a signature cocktail made with oolong tea and black currant, and it was a highlight. Dessert was a choice of mousse cake or mango and vanilla ice cream.

## The Crew

The crew were efficient more than chatty during the meal, but they were friendly whenever I asked for anything. Afterward they became noticeably proactive, offering refills well after the meal was cleared, and whenever I pressed the call button someone arrived within seconds. With every passenger I could see lowering their window shades, the warm cabin lighting made the whole flight feel calm and cozy.

## Worth Booking?

Yes, especially if you can get this plane on a regional route. Flying a full long-haul business class seat on a flight this short, with free Wi-Fi and food this good, is a treat, and China Airlines has one of the most stylish cabins I've sat in. The lounge in Taipei is the weak link, so arrive with time to find a seat or skip it on a busy morning.

You can see how China Airlines compares with every other airline I’ve reviewed in the [Contrail Index](https://www.thecontrail.org/contrail-index/).
