Most flight delays come down to weather, a late crew or a mechanical problem. Passengers on a Caspian Airlines flight at Istanbul Airport on Monday got something far stranger. They had already boarded their Boeing 737 to Iran and were waiting to take off when officials arrived with a court order, seized the plane and made everyone get off.

Caspian Airlines is a Tehran-based carrier that flies Boeing 737s on domestic and international routes, including to Istanbul. According to Turkey's state news agency Anadolu, the aircraft had finished boarding and was preparing for departure when enforcement officers and lawyers for a creditor reached the plane and served the seizure order before it could leave. Passengers and cabin crew were taken off and walked back to the terminal.

## Why the Plane Was Seized

It all came down to money. A Turkish company called ACM Temsil Gözetim, which provides representation and supervision services to airlines, says Caspian owes it about €3 million (roughly $3.4 million) for services at Istanbul Airport. It took the dispute to court and won an order allowing it to hold the plane.

In a statement, the airline described the situation as a "temporary operational restriction" caused by an administrative issue, and Iranian state television said the airline had taken steps to deal with the debt. The same report said the plane would return to Iran on Tuesday. It's still unclear how quickly the stranded passengers were rebooked.

Seizing an airplane over unpaid bills is rare, but it's one of the more effective tools creditors have against airlines based abroad. A plane sitting on the ground in another country is an asset a court can reach, and taking it is the fastest way to force an airline to pay. For the people already sitting in their seats, though, it's hard to imagine a more bizarre way to have a flight canceled.

## A Squeeze From Every Direction

The seizure doesn't appear to be connected to U.S. sanctions, and the reports didn't link the two. Still, it lands at an especially difficult moment for Iran's airlines.

Earlier this month, [Washington threatened to cut off anyone doing business with Iranian airlines from the dollar-based global financial system](https://www.thecontrail.org/turkish-airlines-gulf-carriers-stop-flying-iran-sanctions/), and several countries and carriers have since pulled back. Mahan Air, one of Iran's largest airlines, suspended its flights to Turkey. Lufthansa and Austrian Airlines have also halted their Iran routes through October 24\. According to flight tracking data, daily international flights at Tehran's main airport have fallen from 80 to 90 before the sanctions to around 41.

Turkey itself hasn't followed the new sanctions, and Iran Air still flies regularly between the two countries. Caspian has been under separate U.S. sanctions since 2014, when the Treasury Department accused it of transporting personnel and weapons to Syria for Iran's Revolutionary Guard.

For Iranian travelers, the result is fewer ways out of the country and less certainty that a flight will actually leave, even after everyone's on board.
