- Description: BA's A380s still fly a business class seat designed in 2006, the same one I sat in when I was eight. My dad flew it this week, right as BA unveiled the suites replacing it. Here's what's changing, and why BA is keeping a plane other airlines have scrapped.

My first business class flight was in 2014, on a British Airways 747, in Club World. I was eight. The 747 has since been retired. The seat, somehow, has not. It's still flying on British Airways' A380s, and my dad just flew it, in a middle seat on BA 284 from San Francisco to London. The timing is good, because BA has just shown off the new A380 cabins that are finally replacing it, with Club Suites that have a door at every seat, a brand-new First and a much bigger premium economy.

## The Seat That Won't Retire

BA introduced this version of Club World in 2006, and at the time it was clever. Seats alternate between facing forward and facing backward, which let BA fit more fully flat beds into the cabin. The problem is everything that comes with that trick. Half the cabin rides backward. Most seats sit face to face with a neighbor, separated only by a privacy divider you raise and lower by hand. And if you're at the window, the only way out is to step over the legs of whoever is in the aisle seat, which gets awkward fast at 3 a.m. when they're asleep.

My dad's verdict from his flight this week was blunt. Sitting in a middle seat, he found it "awkward to be facing two other passengers," and riding backward still felt "odd" after all these years. "Literally a two-decade-old product," he told me.

He also sent photos, which took some effort, since it’s hard to get a good angle on a seat when a stranger’s face is about two feet from yours. He did his best.

It's still a fully flat bed, though, and on a 10-hour overnight flight that counts for a lot. But BA has been fitting the Club Suite to its long-haul planes since 2019, with a door, direct aisle access for everyone and no climbing over anybody. On the A380, BA's biggest plane, travelers have kept getting the 2006 version.

## What's Replacing It

BA unveiled its refitted A380 on October 5, and nearly everything about the cabin is changing. The entire upper deck becomes one Club cabin with 106 Club Suites, up from 97 seats today, each with a closing door, its own aisle access and a fully flat bed. First class gets 12 new suites, down from 14, with a closing privacy wall, a personal wardrobe and a seat across from you where a companion can join you for dinner. Premium economy grows the most, from 55 seats to 84, with 38 inches of legroom and more recline. Economy shrinks from 303 seats to 215, and the remaining seats get wider cushions, 12-inch HD screens, Bluetooth and USB-C charging.

Overall, the plane drops from 469 seats to 417\. That says a lot about where BA thinks the money is. It's giving up almost 90 economy seats to fit more people in the cabins that pay the most.

This winter

About 28% fewer A380 flights while planes are refitted. Still flying to Miami, San Francisco, Singapore and Johannesburg.

Coming months

First refitted A380 enters service. Route not announced yet.

The first refitted A380 is due back in service "in the coming months," but BA hasn't said on which route, and it's warned passengers not to assume their flight has the new cabins. Refitting all 12 planes will take a while. To free up aircraft for the work, BA is cutting its A380 flying by about 28% this winter. The A380 is still scheduled to fly from Heathrow to Miami, San Francisco, Singapore and Johannesburg, while Los Angeles and Dubai lose it.

## Why BA Is Keeping a Plane Others Have Scrapped

The A380 hasn't had an easy decade. Air France, Thai Airways, China Southern and Malaysia Airlines have all retired theirs, and Qantas plans to start phasing its fleet out in 2028\. Four engines burn a lot of fuel, and filling 400-plus seats every day is hard on most routes.

BA has a reason most of those airlines didn't, and it's Heathrow. The airport is limited by [a strict government cap](https://www.thecontrail.org/heathrow-slots-40-airlines-flight-cap/) on how many flights it can handle a year, so BA can't simply add more flights to its busiest routes. When you can't add takeoffs, the biggest plane you can put in each one is worth a lot, and nothing BA flies carries more people than the A380.

There also isn't an obvious replacement yet. The natural successor is Boeing's 777-9, which has been repeatedly delayed, and BA has said its new First suite will debut on the A380 before it goes on the 777-9\. BA's A380s are relatively young, too, delivered between 2013 and 2016, so refitting them costs far less than buying new jets. BA isn't alone in thinking that way. Emirates flies 116 A380s and plans to keep them into the 2040s, and Lufthansa brought its A380s back in 2023 after saying they were gone for good.

## Which Seat You'll Get, For Now

If you book a BA A380 in the next few months, you'll almost certainly get the old Club World seat my dad just flew, so where you sit matters. After flying it this week, his top pick is a rear-facing window seat at the back of the cabin. His other favorite is the middle seat in the back row of the upper deck, which gives you two ways out without climbing over anyone. If you're traveling with someone, sit in a pair where you can lower the divider between you and actually talk. And if you'd rather wait for the suites, keep an eye on BA's announcements, because the first refitted plane's route will be the one to book.

As for me, I'll be glad to see the seat go. Eventually.
