- Description: Biman has ordered 25 Boeing aircraft this year, and both deals were announced with American officials standing beside them. Aircraft orders have become one of the few things countries can hand each other in public.

Biman Bangladesh Airlines has ordered 11 more Boeing aircraft, five 787-10s and six 737 MAX 8s. That takes the national carrier's total for the year to 25 jets, after an order for 14 in April that was already the largest in its history.

These aircraft matter for anyone flying to or from Dhaka. What's more interesting is where the deal got signed.

## Where It Was Signed

Boeing and Biman announced the order on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, with a row of officials from both governments standing behind it. Bangladesh sent its civil aviation minister, a state minister for foreign affairs and an advisor to the prime minister. Washington sent Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick and Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau.

That's a lot of political weight for 11 airplanes. It also isn't unusual anymore.

Large aircraft orders have become one of the few transactions a government can point to in public when it wants to show a relationship is healthy. They involve big numbers, they run for years, and they support jobs in the country selling them. Turkish Airlines finalized an order for up to 150 Boeing 737 MAX jets the same week, which gives you a sense of how busy that particular diplomatic channel has been.

None of that means the aircraft aren't needed. It does mean the timing and the venue were chosen carefully.

## The Order

Biman flies 787s, 777s and older 737s today. Its network connects Bangladesh with the Middle East, South and Southeast Asia, and Europe.

Each type in this order does a different job. A 787-10 is the largest version of the Dreamliner, so it adds seats on routes Biman already flies rather than opening new ones. MAX 8s fly farther than the older 737s they replace, which stretches how far the airline can reach on single-aisle routes.

Boeing says both families burn 20 to 25% less fuel than the aircraft they replace. That's the manufacturer's own figure, though the direction is right, and fuel is the cost that decides whether a route survives.

## What It Means for Passengers

Not much immediately. Aircraft ordered this year arrive over the back half of the decade, and airlines rarely announce which routes get them until closer to delivery.

Over time, three things usually follow an order this size:

- **Newer cabins.** Replacement aircraft mean better seats and working entertainment systems, which matters on an airline whose older jets vary a lot.
- **More capacity to the same places.** The 787-10 points at busier existing routes rather than new destinations.
- **Longer single-aisle flights.** The MAX 8's range lets Biman serve places that previously needed a widebody.

Whether that translates into a better trip depends on things an order doesn't fix. Fleet renewal is the easiest part of running an airline to announce and the hardest to feel from seat 34K until the aircraft actually shows up.
